  • Chapter 2, A Chance Meeting

Tim uses a non standard way to ask a question

Tim hadn't really wanted to come along to meet the minister's delegation. But the Professor had insisted the whole group meet the 'nearly' prime minister. He watched as the Professor and Gilles Black shook hands. On the one side was a man who looked like he'd just got out of bed, with his pyjama bottoms, slippers and unkempt grey hair sticking out at all angles. He'd discovered the definition of comfort, and hadn't looked back. One the side of the handshake was an impeccably groomed man, with a well practiced smile. Both were very smart men, and Tim enjoyed the contrast, feeling the Professor stacked up well against his pristine handshake partner.

A voice interrupted his mind's aimless wandering

"That's a pretty intense watch."

Tim looked down at his watch. It was a clunky digital calculator watch he'd had since he was a kid. The kind of watch a child would think was cool, but an adult would see as pointless.
"It has sentimental value", he said looking up to see the woman he was talking to. Her voice alone told him she was American. Her long dark hair, sparkling eyes and pretty features told him, by any measure, she was beautiful. He couldn't think of anything to say; luckily she broke the silence.

"So what do you do here?"

Following his laboured, and unclear expression of what he actually did, he found out her name was Amelia and she was working for the minister, bringing a more professional approach to his campaigning. By all press speculation, Gilles Black was to be the next prime minister when Trevor Bains stepped down midway through his term. She was there to make sure that happened. The conversation moved on, and they talked about subjects from cheesy soap operas to politics.

He could see her passion for social change and her belief that the political process was the way to achieve it. He disagreed and couldn't help but express his polar opposite viewpoint, no matter how much he didn't want to. Tim admired immensely her intellect and her passion for an idea. He'd always found people with aims, big ideas and projects engaging. In his eyes this enhanced the attraction he felt towards her, and also his self consciousness.

Eventually she had to leave to set up the minister's morning meetings. After that Tim wandered around the auditorium nodding acknowledgement to fellow researchers on the Gene project. Eventually he decided to call it a night: the clock had not yet struck nine.

As he left the auditorium Tim felt downbeat. He would have liked to have seen Amelia again, and had the overwhelming feeling that he should have done something. His intrinsic introversion, and his efforts to avoid being bogged down in self consciousness, meant he hadn't done anything. Pausing at the coat check in area outside the auditorium, Tim had an idea. He pulled out a large piece of paper from his pocket, and a fountain pen given to him by the professor. In his best handwriting, he wrote in large cursive:

22 Nov 6pm, Albert Memorial, Kensington Gardens

He then asked the coat check assistant to place the note into Amelia's coat. Leaving into the cold night, Tim's mind was awash with possibilities and permutations. There were so many reasons why she might not turn up; but still he hoped she would.
