All three men were following him now, through the almost derelict street. Tom could feel himself slowing down, and urged his heart and lungs into a final kick as he approached the train station at the end of the road. More shouting from behind him, but now is was distant, drowned by the need to speak to Jessica. He needed to tell her everything. He entered the train station. It had a large central area with seats for people waiting on one side, and ticket kiosks on the other. In front were the barriers to the platforms. Tom saw a train waiting on the platform.
There was no time, the doors were about to shut. Tom vaulted the barriers. Guards shouted behind him. The was one door left on train, and Tom instinctively ran for it. More shouting from over his shoulder. As he reached the door, a hand from inside the train drew it shut. Tom's heart sank.
"Jessica! Jessica!!!! Please I have to tell you...." His shouting was drowned out by the engine. The train was easing off the platform, no way inside. He continued shouting, more out of desperation now. The realization dawned on him that he may never see her again. The train left the platform. He had no idea where he would go now.
Dejected, he turned around and found himself facing two guards with their pistols pointed at him. In the background he saw the men who had followed him. They seemed to be avoiding the guards, but still looking at him. He felt empty.
