Tricks of Gods and Lives of Mortals

  • Chapter 2, Sail Like Your Life Depends On It

Leonidas realises that the past always catches up

The Aratea had been at sea for two weeks, and was on course to reach Egypt in another two. Leonidas had spent much of the time overseeing his men, and researching the voyage. Pernicus had occupied himself by reading material he had collected on Egypt prior to the voyage.

The daylight was receding and Pernicus sat on deck taking in the view. The setting sun cast an orange glow over the gently rolling waves. Pernicus looked out towards the ocean, and felt a pang of regret. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe he should have left his village before. He could have left for Athens like Leonidas, and sampled the glories of the world.

A cry rang out from the aft of the ship and interrupted his thoughts. It was Alexius, the young cabin boy. He managed to make out the shouting; "Spartans, Spartans!!" .

Within seconds Leonidas appeared on deck and bustled to the aft of the Aratea. Pernicus followed, curious to know what was happening. Leonidas placed his hand to his brow and squinted, looking out at the water.

"Damn the Gods - will there always be someone trying to kill me!! How did they find out??"

"Draco, get us to Egypt as fast as you can!!" he boomed.

"Yes my captain", replied his first mate.

Leonidas spent the next few minutes pacing and chuntering to himself, but soon appeared calm. He turned to face Pernicus.

"We have matters to discuss."
