My fairy king

  • Chapter 1, Chapter I

The King gets the latest report about the sparrow-dragons and desides it's time to act.

A young, dark-skinned messenger boy entered the throne room at a trot. He had never been here before, and noticed at once that the walls were made out of stone, not dirt as the usual livingholes. The giant cave was full of servants walking in all directions carrying treys, polishing the bronze statues and a few of them even flying around lightening the chandeliers. The messenger, Belenus, skidded to a halt about midway, bowed deeply towards the other end where the king sat on top of a giant diamond that was partly hidden in the mountain wall, and then continued to cross the hall at a fast jog, criss-crossing between the servants. He closed his thin, purple wings as he came closer, and kneeled in front of the throne.
"The sparrow-dragons attacked us again last night, my Lord." he said addressed to the floor two feet in front of the kings' toes. King Brennus waved away the servant that where offering him a large trey of blueberries and cowberries.
"Damages?" he said in a tired voice.
"Not much, Sir. They tried to hunt a few of the children out through the city gate, but no one got hurt. The children hid in the gatekeepers' room until the attack was over. Lady Siofra, Sir, reported the worst damage. She claims that three of'em attacked, killed and ate one of her shrews last night, but that's all Sir"
"Good work, boy. What is your name?" said Brennus. He sounded interested, but if Belenus had dared to sneak a peak of the kings' face, he could have seen that the king could not care less about him.
"Belenus, my Lord, son of..."
"Well, Belenus" the king interrupted. "You see, this information means that I need to meet the generals, so you have to run around and tell them this." He jumped down from his seat and started pacing before it, talking to himself "I have a very important task for you "Get Cadell, Rayner, Cillian? No, not Cillian he's too wimpish, but we do need Eadwig, he knows everything about the dragons. Cadoc, Kimball and Wystan, that's about it. Oh and of course Guiomar, how could I forget...? Now go!" Belenus was a little taken aback when the king spoke to him as an imbecile, but hurried away to do his biddings. As he left the palace, he had already made a plan in which order he was to seek the generals to save as much time as possible. First he visited Eadwig, who lived in one of the bigger livingholes near the castle hill. As all the wealthier families, they had an employee who sat at the entrance hole to make sure that no one sneaked in. This watcher was a very masculine she-fairy with pearly skin, off-white hair and black eyes and wings. When Belenus came closer, she got to her feets' and blocked the opening.
"Name and business!" she barked.
"My name is Belenus, and I need to see General Eadwig. I...."
"Is he expecting you?" she cut in. This was the second time in a few minutes that Belenus had been interrupted, and he did not like it. The king was both older and much higher in rank than he was so he would not expect anything else from him, but this girl was his own age and in fact below him. He straightened his back and glared right into her eyes.
"I am here with an important message to General Eadwig from the King, I am supposed to tell it to him in person, and you intend to stop me?" he said calmly. The girl lowered her gaze and moved over, and Belenus flew down the hole and landed on a beautiful mosaic floor. Fluorescent plants placed along the walls lighted up the big room, but still it took him a few seconds to get used to the dusk. He spun around looking for someone to show him where the General was, but there was not a soul around.
"Message to General Eadwig from the King!" he yelled, and heard someone move in one of the other rooms. Out from behind a curtain stepped a young man. His skin was like a shadow, his hair light brown, but his wings seemed to be some kind of red-ish colour. When the shorthaired man stepped out in the sunlight that fell in from the hole above Belenus saw that both the mans wings and his eyes was the most extraordinary shade of pink, the same shade as the lips of the first girl he ever kissed. Belenus stared with an open mouth at his beautifully decorated tunic, the fabric was in same shade as his wings and eyes and ornamented with a painting of an autumn tree, and the general's cape that had the same rust-colour that dominated the painting.
"I thought there was a message for me, from the King?" said the general sharply, but still with the hint of a smile in his voice.
"Oh!" said Belenus, his cheeks glowing. He shook his head to clear his thoughts from the vision of a rather chubby fairy-girl with extraordinary pink lips. "The King summons the Generals to a meeting. The sparrow-dragons are attacking us again." And to his bemusement, the general chuckled deeply.
"Finally! It has been far to quiet and calm ever since I finished my training."
"Excuse me, General. Do you like that we are under attack?" Belenus was chocked. He had been prepared to persuade a frightened or maybe even doubting General, since that was how he had reacted when he got the news himself. This enthusiasm caught him rather of guard, so he did not think before he opened his mouth.
"I understand your reaction." said the still laughing general "You are after all not army-trained. For us there is 'pride in fighting to the death, defending our people and city'. Now, shouldn't you be out searching the other generals?" Belenus flustered again, bowed and took off.
